Welcome to my very first blog. I thought that I would share my journey into professional photography. Although I have always loved photography I never thought I would be a professional. From as long as I can remember I always had my camera with me even before iPhones. As my kids (now 18 and 20) grew up, I enjoyed taking photos and documenting their childhoods. But becoming a “professional” just wasn’t on my radar. Five years ago, I went on a large group trip and found that I preferred spending my time behind the camera. When we returned from our trip everyone uploaded their photos.  After seeing mine, one woman called and asked me to photograph her daughters Bat Mitzvah. I was flattered that she loved my photos but was nervous because I had never photographed someone’s important life event. But I said yes and then tried to learn everything I could about photographing events. I asked the photographer I had hired for my own children’s B’Nai Mitzvah for advice. I picked his brain for hours. I learned all about the various lighting scenarios. When I offered to compensate him he asked me to second shoot with him for his next bar mitzvah and I ended up doing that for a year. I learned so much from this “on the job” training. In the meantime I perfected my skills in shooting all the sports and activities in which my kids were engaged (swimming, water polo, skiing and dance). After each event I would publish my photos for all the other parents. After several months my daughter’s dance studio hired me to shoot their annual recital. More and more families started contacting me for family photo shoots and special events, especially Bar and Bat Mizvahs. My business just took off! I have been lucky to have photographed so many bar/bat mitzvahs over the last 5 years. It is truly my pleasure to meet all the different families and document such an important and happy time. My portfolio has evolved to include weddings, family shoots, head shots (studio and outdoors), all types of parties, events, charities and product photography. My largest commercial client is Mattel, Inc. which I have been working with for the past 3 years. I work with Barbie doing product and model photography, creative-concepting, styling, and re-touching … it is fun to play with dolls! I have also done commercial photography for jewelry, clothing and manufactuirng businesses. I enjoy the challenge of learning how to photograph new things. I am constantly researching different photography and lighting techniques, taking new classes, and enjoy practicing my skills.  I am a perfectionist and work hard for that perfect shot. I also enjoy nature photography. In the past I have just done this for myself, but I plan on marketing those photos soon. I will be back soon with another blog post. Please comment below with any ideas or questions that you have!  xo Robin
